gum-disease-jupiter-west-palm-beach-gardensWhat is Periodontal or Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Your gum tissue is not attached to the teeth as high as it may seem. There is a very shallow v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums.

If you have been told you have periodontal (gum) disease, you’re not alone. An estimated 80% of American adults currently have some form of the disease whose symptoms include:

  • Bad breath that won’t go away
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Painful chewing
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing

Types of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis.

  • Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums.
  • Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis.

Research has shown that infection and inflammation in the mouth have been linked to a variety of SYSTEMIC CONDITIONS including PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS, TYPE 2 DIABETES, HEART DISEASE, STROKE.  Bacteria from the dental plaque, can enter the blood stream trough your gum tissue and can them travel throughout the body.

At Intracoastal Pointe Dental, your Jupiter dentists, we pay special attention in the prevention and diagnosis of periodontal disease.  Periodontal disease, if detected and treated early can be circumvented from causing some serious health consequences.
