Early childhood dental care is important to identify the presence of one or more infected teeth or gums, missing teeth or filled tooth surfaces of any tooth in a preschool-age child between birth and 6 years of age. The term “Severe Early Childhood Caries” (ECC) refers to “atypical,” “progressive,” “acute” or “rampant” patterns of dental caries.

Making Smiles for the Whole Family Dental, located in Jupiter, Florida near West Palm and Palm Beach Gardens, recognizes that early childhood caries is a significant public health problem in selected populations and is also found throughout the general population.

We urge parents to recognize that a child’s teeth are susceptible to decay as soon as they begin to show. Early childhood caries is an infectious disease. There are many aspects of early childhood caries; baby bottle tooth decay is recognized as one of the more severe manifestations of this syndrome.

It is advantageous for your child’s first dental consultation visit to occur within six months of the first tooth showing through the gum and no later than 12 months of age, to receive oral health education based on the child’s developmental needs (also known as anticipatory guidance). Dr. Frias of Making Smiles for the Whole Family Dental urges her patients and parents of small infants, newborns and children (including expectant parents) to be informed by our offices about reducing the risk for early childhood dental disease.
